From game drives in national parks to idyllic moments on the shores of Lake Malawi, you’ll have ample opportunities to explore, relax, and connect with the friendly local communities. With a mix of nature and culture, this 12-day tour offers an extensive and immersive exploration of Malawi’s best, leaving you with cherished memories and a deep appreciation for this beautiful destination.
Day 1- Starting Day for Your Malawi Adventure
Today you will be making your way to Barefoot Lodge. Here you will have the opportunity to meet your guide and fellow travellers. We will have the opportunity to discuss the itinerary and get acquainted. We’ll meet at 5:30 pm at Barefoot Restaurant. If arriving early, there is an opportunity to explore the nearby villages via the local kabaza (bicycle or motorbike taxi) at an additional cost.
Day 2- Liwonde via Dedza
Departing after breakfast, we’ll make our way to Liwonde National Park. We will be travelling via Dedza Town. If time allows, we will visit the very well-known Dedza pottery. Lunch will be en-route and we will arrive in time to settle in and be ready for our boat trip on the Shire River.
Day 3- Liwonde National park
On day three, we’ll leave the camp after coffee and rusks to be on safari early in the morning. We will be spending the morning in the park searching for wildlife and that perfect photo opportunity. For brunch (something in between breakfast and lunch), we will turn back to the camp and during the heat of the day, be around the lodge. In the afternoon, we’ll have the opportunity to do another game drive to find that elusive lion and enjoy nature in all of its splendour. Dinner will be served with African night sounds in the background.
Day 4- Mulanje Massive
On day four, we’ll leave after our last game drive within this magnificent park. We’ll head south towards “the island in the sky” Mount Mulanje. Mulanje has Malawi’s highest peak and the scale of this truly magnificent mountain has to be seen to be appreciated. Its bare rock flanks tower to 3000m, dwarfing all that surrounds it. We’ll arrive early in the afternoon and the rest of the day is spent at your own leisure.
Day 5- Mount Mulanje
On day five, you’ll have the opportunity to embark on various options of different guided hikes around the area. You might even decide to scale the highest peak. This can be arranged with your guide on arrival at the accommodation. There is also an option to enjoy the day on the nearby golf course or laze around the swimming pool.
Dinner will be served in the local restaurant at 7:00 pm.
Day 6- Mjete Wildlife Reserve
The next two days we are back in the African bush. Arriving in time, we will embark on our first safari in the late afternoon.
Majete Wildlife Reserve is a unique conservation and tourist destination. The amazing success story of recovery and restoration and the continued protection of endangered species have led Majete to become one of the most popular reserves in Malawi for wildlife and safaris. Majete lies in the Lower Shire Valley in the South West of Malawi.
Day 7- Mjete Wildlife reserve
During the cool hours of the morning and the pleasant hours of the afternoon and early evening of day seven, we’ll partake in two more safaris, “hunting” for our favourite animal. Dinner will be served at the tranquil bush restaurant.
Day 8 & 9- Lake Malawi – South
After leaving the bush behind, we’ll make our way north towards Lake Malawi. For the next two days, we’ll stay in Cape Maclear fishing village. Here we’ll have the opportunity to experience first-hand the fishing culture of Malawi. Because of its rich fish harvest, the lake plays an important part in the economy. Fishing villages are scattered along the shore and the traditional industry and practices are an attraction to visitors. Dinner will be served under the stars on the beach.
Day 10-11- Lake Malawi – Central
Today we will make our way further north along the shores of Lake Malawi. Arriving at Senga Bay, we’ll take a short boat ride to the Island. At Blue Zebra Island Lodge, we will enjoy 2 days of relaxation, comfort and tranquillity. This is a perfect way to end your tour and reflect on the many images and new experiences you have encountered. For the active traveller, there are a bunch of water-based activities to participate in during the two days on the island. Kayaking, snorkelling and swimming in the lake to name a few. Dinner will be served in the Island Lodge restaurant.
